On August 27, 2006, at 6:19 am local time, there was a fatal Lexington plane crash. Comair flight 5191 crashed less than a minute after takeoff from Lexington, Kentucky’s Blue Grass Airport.

This Comair flight was scheduled to land in Atlanta at 7:18 am local time. Comair is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Delta Airlines, and this is the second plane crash in a decade suffered by a Comair plane.

Of the 50 people aboard, the co-pilot is in critical condition at the University of Kentucky’s Chandler Medical Center, and the other 49 people were killed.

Wrong runway

According to the flight data recorder and the cockpit voice recorder, the Comair/Delta plane took off from runway 26, which is 3,500 feet long, only half as long as the main runway where it should have taken off. The minimum length needed for a plane of this type to successfully take off is 5,000 feet.

The plane hit the boundary fence as it passed the end of the runway, then hit some trees and crashed in a field about a half-mile from the end of the runway. It then burst into flames.

The local police and firefighters arrived about two minutes after the crash occurred.

Kentucky governor Ernie Fletcher, currently in Germany, has made a televised public statement over a cell phone connection. The Federal Administration has admitted that it violated staffing policies by having only one air traffic controller on duty at the time the Comair plane was taking off.

The National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) has begun an investigation into this accident and at this time, believe that no terrorism was involved. However, there will probably be some airline crash litigation in the near future.

If you have a loved one who was aboard that Comair plane, please call our offices for legal help. We can obtain information for you, offer you support and guidance through this difficult time, and will be glad to represent you if any airline crash claim is thought to be appropriate. Consulting a Kentucky aviation accident lawyer might be the best thing you could do at this point.
